Saltwater by Jessica Andrews – DNF

The book follows the journey of Lucy who, having grown up in Sunderland, earns a place at University in London. She then moves to Ireland to discover if she can find who she really is.

When I read the synopsis for this book, I was intrigued. Having moved from North-West Wales to South Wales, and then to Southern England, I was curious to see if I connected with any of the feelings expressed by Lucy.

Unfortunately, though, this book was not for me. I should clarify – it is easy to interpret DNF as meaning that the book was so bad that I was unable to finish it. This is not the case.

I honestly think that, for the right people, this would be a brilliant book to read – and the usually positive reviews for the book support this. It is simply that this book was not for me.

The book reminded me, at times, of The Catcher in the Rye – another book which was not for me. The story often seemed quite ordinary, and there was not much action throughout the book, which is how I remember The Catcher in the Rye to be.

I have, therefore, not given this book a rating because 1. It feels unfair to give a rating to a book which I was unable to finish; and 2. While the book was not for me, I honestly think others would enjoy it – and I would not want to put them off with a low rating.
